  • The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level.
  • Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP’s Division of Communications and Public Information (DCPI) communicates UNEP’s core messages to stakeholders and partners, raising environmental awareness and enhancing the profile of UNEP worldwide.
  • This post is located in UNEP/ DCPI at the Nairobi duty station.Responsibilities:The consultant/space designer will be engaged to provide services in connection with the vision, design and execution of branding the ‘environmental space’ on the UN compound in the lead up to and during the first ever United Nations Environment Assembly (23-27 June 2014) and other off-campus areas in Nairobi, Kenya.

In close collaboration with UNEP and in constant consultation with UNON, the consultant’s deliverables will include: Briefings on event needs and client expectations, on-site recce to establish site feasibility and considerations, concepts, drawings, detailing and recommending materials based on the budget available.Under the supervision of the Head of Special Events Unit and the guidance of the Division Director of DCPI the consultant will:

  • Conduct on site recce, evaluation and site feasibility study.
  • Conduct meetings with all relevant parties in UNEP and UNON to ensure that all proposals are within defined parameters e.g. facilities management, construction provisions and prohibitions, security, safety, etc.
  • Explore and present conceptual ideas for a cohesive, coherent and creative branding of the relevant off and on campus spaces incorporating the visual identity elements of the event
  • Present space planning studies for the use of available spaces for the different planned activities, including but not limited to different types and levels of exhibits
  • On approval of concept/study, develop same into finalised designs, material recommendations
  • Develop and implement a planning timeline from the commencement date to delivery of final approved drawings
  • Ensure detailed and accurate briefs are given to all 3rd party production contractors
  • Coordinate the work of UNEP contractors to ensure accurate and consistent execution of designs as approved by UNEP through to full completion and dismantling post-event.
  • Ensure sustainability of material specifications, construction process and a plan for material re-use post event.

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Architecture, Interior Design, Fine Arts, Graphic Design.
  • A first level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience:

  • At least five (5) years of progressively relevant experience in space/site design and management.
  • Experience in the implementation of communication and branding plan/strategy.
  • Skills in management reporting and general communications activities such as writing materials is desirable.


  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required (English preferably mother tongue).
  • Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Other Desirable Skills:
Excellent computer skills (Microsoft office, Internet, email) are required.
