The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) is a non-profit making State Corporation established by the Government of Kenya in 1980 by an Act of Parliament (cap.225A) which was repealed and replaced by the KNEC Act, 2012.

The mandate of KNEC is the development, management and certification of school and post school examinations.

As a State Corporation, KNEC falls under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.


KNEC seeks to recruit a visionary, dynamic and innovative Kenyan Citizen to fill the position of Chief Executive Officer.

Suitably qualified candidates are invited to apply for the position.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reporting to the Council, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to the Council will be responsible for the implementation of the Council’s decisions in a results oriented and timely manner in order to achieve the Council’s goals, objectives and agreed performance targets.
  • In addition, the Chief Executive Officer will be responsible for among other things:-
  • The day to day management of the Council;
  • Be the Secretary to the Council;
  • Providing leadership in accordance to the requirements of the KNEC Act 2012
  • Efficient and effective management of examinations in accordance with the Act and the Government policy;
  • Implementation of corporate strategic plans and policies;
  • Responsible for the affairs and transactions of the Council, the exercise, discharge and performance of its objectives and functions, and the general administration of the Council.

Performance Measures
The Chief Executive Officer shall hold office for a period of five (5) years and shall be eligible for re-appointment for one further term subject to performance.
In addition to the duties and responsibilities outlined above, detailed key tasks will be agreed between the successful candidate and the Council.

Basic Qualifications and Experience

  • A person shall not be appointed the Chief Executive Officer unless that person has:-
  • at least a masters degree from a recognised university, in education or other field relevant to the mandate of the Council
  • experience of at least ten (10) years in
  • matters pertaining to education, training or research
  • policy formulation and procedures of Government; and
  • proven leadership ability and integrity at senior management level.

Other Relevant Competencies

  • This position requires a results-oriented, self driven and reform minded person with capacity to motivate and lead a team of senior professionals in processing examinations in a timely manner.
  • Compliance with Requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution

Applicants to this post will be expected to satisfy the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and submit the following clearance Certificates together with their applications:-

  • Certificate of Clearance from Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission;
  • Certificate of good conduct from the National Police Service;
  • Certificate from the Credit Reference Bureau;
  • Certificate of Clearance from Higher Education Loans Board;
  • Valid Tax Compliance Certificate from KRA.
