icipe – African Insect Science for Food and Health is an intergovernmental organisation funded by governmental aid agencies, UN organisations and private foundations to carry out research and training in environmentally sound and sustainable management of arthropods for improving health and agricultural productivity in the tropics.

icipe has 400 staff to support its research and capacity building programmes located at various sites in Kenya and Ethiopia.

icipe wishes to urgently recruit a suitable person to fill the position of Research Assistant in the icipe Malaria Integrated Vector Management (IVM) Project, Tolay, Ethiopia, in the
Human Health Division.

This is a nationally recruited position for which a competitive remuneration package will be offered to the right candidate.The position is tenable in Tolay, Ethiopia. This is a two-year contract, with opportunities for renewal pegged on individual performance and availability of funds.

Overall purpose of the job: The overall purpose of the job is to support the malaria IVM programme in objectives that require social mobilisation and activities that deal with baseline and follow up data collection for assessing the impact of the project’s interventions.

Specific duties:The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Conduct socio-economic household surveys; helping to establish integrated community-based income-generating activities through cultivation of plants with medicinal properties to subsequently enable the intervention sustainability;
  • Promote and strengthen the inter-sectional linkages of the project;
  • Conduct advocacy and social mobilisation activities;
  • Facilitate and lead field trials on biopesticides;
  • Take responsibility and supervise the overall routine data collection activities of the project;
  • Lead and guide malaria field scouts conducting routine entomological and epidemiological monitoring activities; and
  • Develop action plans of the intervention, write consolidated activity report, and submit to the project management.

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in sociology or related fields
  • Knowledge and skills of social work and technology transfer to rural communities
  • Ability to conduct awareness and community mobilisation activities, including training, and participatory malaria control and prevention activities.
  • At least 3 years experience with a research and development organisation

Other desirable attributes:

  • Good knowledge of computer applications for data management and reporting
  • Good spoken and written English and Oromiffa.

Reporting
This position reports to the Scientist-in-Charge, icipe Malaria IVM Project, Ethiopia.

The selected candidate should be available to start as soon as possible.
